I can write this from the point of view of someone who has graduated from West Brook and is now a young adult (30). West Brook is a top notch institution with teachers who care the utmost about education and thier students. I know that some of thier rules may be over the top and the punishments may seem excessive, but face it the school is there to provide a great education for children, not as a social marketplace for the latest fads, such as pulling down your pants to your knees, or sexally revealing clothing. Let them be children. With some regimented dress codes and the punishments to enforce them, the children can focus more on learning instead of how they can rebel against the rules or skirt them. People can complain on and on about how much the punishments are so severe, but the rules are there for a reason, and no one will complain when one of the rules prevents a Columbine from happening with our kids, because a tucked in shirt led to a teacher seeing the outline of a pistol tucked into the pants of a student bent on harming other children. Graduating top of your class at West Brook means something, and colleges look at that. Our top five graduates had three perfect SAT scores and the other two had a 1590 and 1570 (out of a perfect 1600). We had multiple national merit scholars. The school frequently wins first place at multiple UIL events in both academic and liberal arts catagories. The school offers a ton of AP (advanced placement) classes, and if you take advantage of it (as I did) you can basically finish the first two years of college before you even enter. A few of our top graduates decided to go to local college Lamar University, and they excelled at thier fields, consistently making presisdents list (for a perfect 4.0 in a semester), and never not making dean's list. Our top graduates at West Brook, recieved numerous scholarships and most of us got free rides ( all tuition, books, living expenses, and food were totally paid for plus additional spending cash) at prestigious institutions. We had several students from my class achieve Ph.d's and two of them are now medical doctors (one was a full fledged M.D. at 22 years old). Our academic team beat every challenger at the channel 6 challenge and the Lamar Texaco challenge including the private scools of Legacy Academy and Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School. Point of the matter is that a great education is there for those students who choose to take. The school can only provide the opportunity for students to excel, it is not the institution's responsibility to coddle students along (except for special needs students). That job is for parents. If a student does badly on tests or makes low grades, maybe the parents should look at themselves, and become a better, more proactive parent to help their child and become stricter about studying instead of just letting their children do whatever. Instead of always looking at the worst performing students, look at the best ones. They had the parents who pushed them, and without a top notch educational institution supporting them, then how did they do so well? A teachers job isn't to be a child's parent, they only have a hour a day to make sure they put as much knowledge into a child as they can, and they do this at West Brook exceptionally well. Each teacher has 20-30 students to teach, and what time they do have for individual help would best be served by giving it to students who want to excel. Instead of this constant negativity towards this school, get on your kids to do better, and take a more proactive role in their education. And people.....Pat their teachers on the back, because they really do a darn fine job, especially in today's scary world of drugs and kids with guns. These people have the guts to brave all of that and still get the job done because let's face it, they love the kids. Why else would they have taken the job, because it sure isn't for the great pay. GO BIG BROOK BRUINS.
