DISAPPOINTED I discovered 2nd & Charles about a year ago, and have purchased at least 50 books from them since then. I'm an 8th grade reading teacher and have supplied my students with many different options, varying reading levels and genres. I was so excited on my first several trips. The staff was so friendly and helped me pick out tons of novels for my classroom, and I got a 20% teacher discount. I have purchased books and movies for myself and my own children and did not even try to use the discount. Today, I bought 4 novels that I wanted for my classroom library. I was being friendly and mentioned that I read the novels and then bring them to my students. (Side note, sometimes I give them to students first.) My students and I enjoy sharing the excitement. We talk about the characters and plot and make valuable teacher-student connections. I believe this enhances the classroom experience for both of us. I read a lot of books (around 70 last year), many of which I wouldn't choose for myself, but to be able to share the experience with a student or encourage them to read and finish the novel. Many 8th graders get bored quickly and have a hard time finishing a book! Anyway, the clerk told me today that I couldn't get the discount if I was going to read them first! She justified this by saying that I was buying them for me and asked if I understood. I told her no, I do not understand. These books will be shared with my students and possibly even given to them. She gave me the discount anyway, but looked at me like I was shady the whole time. That made me so angry. I paid for my books and left quickly. I don't know that I'll go back. It's absurd to say that I can't read the books I share with my students!
